Following from my last post, I did a bit of scrounging into the possibility of the prefix mer~ being of Sanskrit origin. I stumbled upon this site -
http://www.irfca.org/docs/place-names.html
and found the following entry -
"-mer Perhaps 'mountain' from Sanskrit 'meru'. E.g., Ajmer, Barmer, Jaisalmer. "
Granted, in this example, mer is a suffix, whereas in Merapi it is a prefix, but it's a good lead.

In bahasa Indonesia possibly Mer-api = ber api, mean having fire (api=fire).
ReplyDeleteA plausible theory, but I think the name possible pre-dates bahasa Indonesia, so I'm more inclined to go with the Sanskrit :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by though. Nice photos on your blog.
