Yolngu - Indonesian

The previous post mentioned the word Balanda which is Yolngu (an Australian Aboriginal language) for white person.

This site

has a PDF format Yolngu-English dictionary available to download, which I did and found a list of Yolngu words that are very similar to some common Indonesian words. Here's what I found. I may have missed some. The first word is the Yolngu, followed by the English, followed by the Indonesian equivalent.

balanda - a white person - Belanda
bandirra - a flag - bendera
bapa - father - bapak
barra - west - barat
bathu - a stone - batu
dhimurru - east - timur
dhinggi - high (as in mountains etc) - tinggi
djaga - to look after - jaga
djalathan - south - selatan
djaran - a horse - jaran (Javanese)
djawa - storm, cyclone - perhaps related to the Javanese jawah (rain)
djinapan - a rifle - senapan
garrgatji -a saw - gergaji
gayu - wood, a tree - kayu
gola- syrup, treacle - gula
gonydjin - a key - kunci (could be just coincidence although the 'y' in gonydjin, if I'm not mistaken is not really pronounced)
Manggatharra - Makasar
marriyang - a gun - meriyam (again, possibly just coincidence)
muthiyarra - a pearl - mutiara
nona - a white woman - nona
rrothi - bread - roti
rrupiya - money - rupiah
ya - yes - ya (pretty universal though, that one)

This is apparently only a very small sample. According to this site,
"Some 450 Yolngu words have their orign in the Macassan/Indonesian language, such as rupiah for money and balanda (Hollander) for white person. In art, song and dance the two cultures continue to celebrate their special relationship with each other." http://www.abc.net.au/message/tv/ms/s645986.htm
